What is Windows Phone Recovery Tool?

Windows Phone Recovery Tool is what you need when you get your Windows Phone in a difficult position and you want to go back to the factory set image.

This tool was used to recover a failed Windows Phone 8.1 which could not be reset to its original state using Settings menu. The phone entered a state from which it could not recover. All you could see was repeated 'gears' coming up; Windows logo flashing, and this repeating over and over again.

The Windows Phone recovery tool was downloaded from here to the laptop:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Mobile-Phone-Tools/Others/Windows-Phone-Recovery-Tool.shtml

Click Download button on this page to display

Click on External mirror1 and save the file to the laptop or PC.

Software Recovery Tool. Tool currently supports all WP8 Microsoft
Lumia phones and later also other brands.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Double click the tool in its saved location.

Connect your phone to the PC (in this case a laptop) with the USB Cable. Do not disconnect or mess with phone till the process is complete. You may need to push the Volume Low and Power buttons on the Windows Phone together till it vibrates.

Click on Lumia icon.

The program is waiting for the phone to be connected. You should really get the phone to connect by pressing the Volume down and Power down/up button till you feel the vibrations.

Click on the Install Software button. Another warning and a disclaimer.

Click Continue. A package will be downloaded and it is a hefty file (1.6GB). This takes quite a bit of time depending on your Internet connection speed.

It is better to start with fully charged battery.

Click Next.

The package installation process begins. The phone selection page is displayed. If it does not you ma have to press hard the Volume down and Power buttons together till you feel the vibration.

Click on Lumia 929 (this is Lumia model number for the Nokia Icon).

The program will try to read the phone information.

By this time your phone starts up with Verizon and Windows splash screens and you will asked to customize. The phone is now restored to the Windows Phone 8.1 Original.

The restore agent will pop-up and guides you through restoring the app settings etc. Your apps, alarms, contacts will all be recovered. The photos/videos are all gone, perhaps uploaded to the OneDrive. If it was uploaded to OneDrive, I am not sure which named location it was uploaded to. Fortunately I had copied all the photos/videos to a 1TB drive.

The version of Windows Phone 8.1 restored was the following:

How to remove red eye from an image in Windows 8.1?

The removal of red eye is quite easy but you need to download and install Windows Photo Gallery from Microsoft site here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/photo-gallery

Let us first install Photo Gallery.

Download this file

The system requirements for Windows Essentials 2012 which has Photo Gallery and other programs.

Select how you want to install.

Select items you want to install.

Sign the license agreement.

In Photo Gallery import the picture. This was imported from a Nokia Icon camera and there is a menu item to fix the red eye. Just follow the procedure(shown inside rectangle in the image below).

That's as simple as that. The red color just vanishes.

http://hodentekhelp.blogspot.com/2015/04/is-samsung-tv-compatible-with-windows.html - Correction

There is an advanced setting in the phone that lets you choose the way you want to view the image. Unfortunately the default was flipped view. When you choose correctly the image gets displayed correctly. I should have guessed.

These are the Advanced settings as in the picture:

ScreenMirroring7

I still need to work on the audio rendition.

Is Samsung TV compatible with Windows 8.1 Miracast wireless display feature?

Oliver:Water Color

Yes it does but there is a problem. Samsung Smart TV cannot pair with Windows Phone 8.1 (Nokia Icon) is a message I get but it still works but there appears to be problem.

I did post saying that Samsung Smart TV is not compatible with Miracast wireless display feature.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-hardware/what-smart-
tvs-are-compatible-with-windows-81/f0187562-5a4e-4cf4-9820-51502d92466d

After trying couple of more times I find that screen mirroring from a Windows Phone 8.1 does work but the image is inverted (Up/Down).

How to developer-unlock a Windows Phone 8.1 Preview and deploy an app?

You are a Windows Phone 8.1 Preview developer and you have created a nice app that you want to
test on a phone you own.

How do  you test it?

While developing the application using Visual Studio 2013 Express for Windows Update 3 (this is a
free developer resource, read more here) you will see it on a emulator, the phone image that emulates your actual phone  that comes on your PC/Laptop when you run the app. After running the app on your laptop you should deploy it to your phone. The phone you buy is by default locked and you need to unlock it.

Details of unlocking the phone are here:
Go to this link:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=317976

This is how I was able to do.
  • I connected my phone (Nokia Icon) to the laptop.
  • On my Windows 8.1 Professional (x64 bit) laptop I searched for Windows Phone and got these results(few shown)

  • I clicked on the Windows Phone Developer Registration. I do have a developer license attached to my Windows LiveID (you shold have one too).

The following screen opened up. Notice the last line in this screen referring to the status. The phone I am using is identified.

I clicked on Register

The phone gets registered and the status shows it is unlocked now.

I can now deploy the app to the device. If deployment is successful I will be able to see the app on my app list in the phone.

I have to take care of the following before I deploy.
Make sure the phone is connected to the PC/laptop on which you developed the application.
Build the app for ARM architecture (you should find it immediately below the menu item Store on your Visual Studio 2013 IDE, see next image) and make sure the phone is working and is not locked.

How do I take a screenshot of a display on my Windows Phone 8.1?

This is easy but a little tricky but you do get a signal when you capture an image.
I am using Nokia Icon using Windows Phone 8.1 Preview.

Also you may not have a folder called Screenshots in your Photo where it is supposed to get saved. But as soon as you add your first screen shot, a folder Screenshots will be created where your first screen shot is stored. You do not need an app to do this.

How do you capture?

With the display showing your image, hold and press both Volume Up(hardware) and Start (hardware) buttons together. This is the tricky part because the Start (hardware start) button when pressed turns your display dark and I could do it only 30% of the times. But it does work.

Here is a screenshot I took today:
