Presently Telnet Server is not implemented on Windows 10. Telnet Client is installed but not enabled. Most probably it is deprecated as was done for the latest server.
---------
Telnet server deprecated use remote desktop
---------------
TELecommunication NETwork protocol is an unsecured (username/password is in text, not encrypted) network protocol and its use will be prejudicial to security on local networks as well as Internet.
It was still available in Windows 7. Follow these threads (1, 2) for Installing
Telnet Client and Telent Server on Windows 7.

Telnet client is installed but not enabled on Windows 10 and you need to
enable it. You can go this directory to access telnet.exe on Windows 10.
C:\Windows\System32\telnet.exe. Presently it is used to connect to remote servers

How do you connect to Windows 10 remotely?

In order to do this you need to enable Remote Desktop Access on your WIndows 10 computer. It is easy and works OK. It is a very useful feature and provides lot of flexibility.

In this scenario I am connecting to Windows 10 on my laptop remotely from my Windows 7 (x64) Professional on my P775 Toshiba Satellite computer.

Click Start on Windows 7 and locate the item Remote Desktop Connection at the very top (could be different in yours, look for it).

Click on it to open the following (you may need to click on Options at the bottom:
RDT01.png

Enter the name of the computer (XXXXXXX) here and place checkmark for 'Allow me to save credentials' and click OK.

Windows Security page opens asking for credentials. Enter your password and click OK.

RDT02

You get a message to 1) Turn on the remote computer and 2) Enable remote access on that computer.
--------------
Now go to the Windows 10 computer and open the Control Panel and locate System Properties and click open the Remote tab as shown.

RDT-Win10_01

Place check mark for Allow remote connections to this computer and click OK.
-------------------------------
//You may get the following  message, just click OK and Apply/OK on the previous screen.
Come back to your Windows 7 computer and enter the credentials again and this time you may  this certificate related message.

RDT03.png

Clicking on View Certificate opens the following page with three tabs as shown. Some details of the above are here:

How to run the System File Checker(SFC) program?

After using the computer you may reach a situation that something or the other not working, perhaps it is the browser, perhaps it is some device on your computer. The reason could be corruption of the system files.

This can be fixed using the SYSTEM FILE CHECKER program on your computer. It is located as shown
in the next image.

This program requires elevated permissions and should be run by the administrator.
This is a two-step process:
1st Step: Start Command window with administrative privileges. The second step [running SYSTEM FILES CHECKER (sfc )] cannot be run if you are not the administrator of the computer.
Close all open programs
Click on Windows Icon at bottom left extreme and this will bring up a window on top of it as shown. In the place which says ‘Search Programs and files’ type-in cmd as shown.

After you type-in you should see that search brings up the following: (notice the cmd at the very top)

2.  Go to the very top. Place your mouse on cmd but do not click. Now right click on cmd and a menu opens up as shown.

Click on ‘Run as administrator’
The above window goes away and your display goes dark and a small window asking ‘Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer’ is displayed. In the bottom there is a ‘Yes’ and a ‘No’.
3. Click Yes. The screen becomes visible and you will see the following window. In my case it is white and in yours probably black with white letters:

You should see ‘Administrator’ at the very top as shown in the above.
This is the window that allows you to make changes to your computer.
Step 2: Running the SFC program that fixes system files.
Type in as shown: Spelling is important. After typing in sfc leave a space and then type the rest.

After typing in as shown hit ENTER on your key board.
The process may take some time. You should see the progress as shown:

Note: I did not have any serious problems, but to show you the steps I ran this program. It does take quite a bit of time as it goes through the whole system.
However the program cleaned up my files:

You can check the log file at the above indicated location.

What is a Easy Transfer Cable? or do you need to go from XP to Windows 7?

You have already heard that Windows XP support is history. If not, read the following:

http://hodentek.blogspot.com/2014/01/windows-xp-support-anit-malware-support.html

After Windows XP came a number of OS Upgrades the most important ones being Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and soon Windows 10. Of course there were two different architectures as well x32bit and x64bit.

If you had had a Windows XP and migrating to Windows 7 you would need a easy tool. Looks like Windows Easy Transfer was utility made just for this and should be available in Windows 7.

With this utility there were three ways you could transfer stuff between two computers as shown in the opening screen of Windows Easy Transfer (migwiz.exe).

If you were without a network connection you could use the Easy Transfer Cable or create a file on a external HD or a USB Flash drive.

Well what is this Easy Transfer Cable?

It is a USB Male-to-Male connector with an intervening electronic device that allows fast transfer between the connected computers while providing short-circuit protection.

You could buy this cable from a number of vendors such as Belkin (Model FSU258, FSU279),  Dynex (DX-C113231), and many others.

Here is a picture of one of the Belkin cables.
Here is a listing of transfer support it provides.

How do you access folder / file properties in Windows 8.1?

In earlier versions of Windows you would right click a file or a folder to access the properties via the drop-down menu.

But in Windows 8.1 (in my case Windows 8.1 Professional 64bit), a right click would just refresh the Windows Desktop and nothing happens). I believe this is not how it should be and here is a way to look at the folder / file properties.

In Windows 8.1 open the File Explorer as shown.

Click open the folder for which you want to review the properties. In this case Desktop for example.
The Window for Desktop opens with its own ribbon as shown.

Choose the folder or file (mysorian in this case) and access its properties via the Properties toolbar item.

It was so easy in earlier versions. I wish the earlier way of access is restored.

What is FileZilla and how do you use it to trasnfer files from a site to your computer?

In the last post I described moving an ASP.NET website contents from one hosting provider to another. However the described process copied content on a site from one provider to a site on another provider.

What if you don't have a new provider? Let us say, you want all the content from an existing site to your hard drive.  In this case FileZilla comes in very handy.

FileZilla is a free FTP solution which provides both an FTP Client (allowing downloading your site content) and FTP server (you can upload files to a site) and is supported by a forum and its users.
You can download FileZilla from here:

https://filezilla-project.org/

You need to download the file from this site shown here:

Wait, do not click on the big green button. It will also allow you to download FileZilla, but it will bring in extra bundled stuff you may not need. When you scroll down you will see more options and there choose to download the one shown here:

If you want both client and server, you can get them by clicking both the buttons, one at a time. I got only the client program as I want to download from my website. Once you start the FileZilla_3.7.4.1_win32-setup program it is pretty much wizard driven. Follow the steps including this one here:

Once the installation is complete you will be seeing this:

Lots of stuff to do in the above screen using links. I just clicked OK after briefly looking over it.

Now you can start your transfer from site to hard disk. Double click the FileZilla short cut on your desktop to display the user interface as shown.
You need to fill in the details of the website you are downloading from and of course you need the authentication details. The Port can be blank or 21 be default. Click on the QucikConnect button.
The program establishes  connection to the website and brings in the root folder of the site to the right hand pane as shown. The left hand pane shows the computer drives and folders as shown.

As soon as the connection is established you can see all the files/folders on your site populating the right hand site as shown (only the root is shown and it can be expanded).

All that is needed is to create a folder on the computer (In C:\drive in this case) and right click the root folder and click Download from the list as shown.

The files from righthad side gets trasnferred to the left side and you will be seeing the activities in the pane above. The downloaded files are shown progrssively transferred as shown the bottom pane. It also shows the files that missed for some reason, you can go over later adn get those files as well if necessary. It will show all the files downloaded.

That's all there is to it.

What is a hardware-assited detection tool and how to get it?

If you want Windows Virtual PC  you should have processor in your computer which is capable of hardware-assisted virtualization. Also in your BIOS you should have HAV turned on for the following: AMD-V™, Intel® VT or VIA® VT. This is because if your computer does not support HAV, then you cannot run Virtual PC. This is the first step for running windows Virtual PC.

Microsoft has a tool to check this called havdetectiontool.exe(180 KB). The tool not only checks this but also finds whehter it is enabled in the BIOS.

You can download this tool from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=592

Supported platforms:
The HAV detection tool ONLY supports the following operating systems and editions/versions:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1, 2 (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate)
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Professional), Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Professional)
Windows 7 (Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, Ultimate).

I checked this on my Toshiba Satellite P775. Here is the result from running this executable on the Windows 7 (x64) Ultimate.

How do you fix this Windows 7 problem?

Here is the problem statement:
If you create a new folder on Windows 7 desktop the folder attribute is read-only. Of course you cannot read a folder, the attribute refers to files within the folder. You may try to uncheck it in the folder properties, click Apply and click OK. If you open the folder again you will see that the read-only properties is back.

If you had for example, a word document or something and you try to modify and try to save it you get a message that it cannot be saved as it is read-only.

Trying to change the file attribute from the properties window will not work.

Work around:

You have to use the 'attrib' command from your DOS screen.

Type cmd in Start's search box.
Windows Command Processor 'cmd' will be the first one at the top.
Right click 'cmd' and click Run as Administrator
In the CMD screen type the following:

C:\attrib -r +s C:\Users\User1\Desktop\X
User1 is user whose desktop has a problem folder X which needs this fix.

The command attrib is described as:

C:\Windows\system32>attrib /?
Displays or changes file attributes.
ATTRIB [+R | -R] [+A | -A ] [+S | -S] [+H | -H] [+I | -I]
       [drive:][path][filename] [/S [/D] [/L]]
  +   Sets an attribute.
  -   Clears an attribute.
  R   Read-only file attribute.
  A   Archive file attribute.
  S   System file attribute.
  H   Hidden file attribute.
I   Not content indexed file attribute.
  [drive:][path][filename]
Specifies a file or files for attrib to process.
/S  Processes matching files in the current folder
      and all subfolders.
  /D  Processes folders as well.
/L  Work on the attributes of the Symbolic Link versus
the target of the Symbolic Link

I have Windows 7 on my laptop, can I dual boot?

Yes you can.

If you have set up dual boot, you will come up with a window as shown when you start up.

If you want to go to Windows 7 you click on Windows 7 or, on Windows 8 otherwise. If you do not take any action within a certain time it will boot to Windows 8.

Even if you are in Windows 8, you can access the files and folders in Windows 7. If you are the administrator you can access files and folders.

How do I set up dual booting?

These two posts show you, how you can.

This post shows how you can set up your Windows 7 computer for dual booting.
